En el marco del Acuerdo de Escazú, FES Transformación Social Ecológica y Climate Tracker extienden invitación a periodistas de América Latina y el Caribe para visibilizar la ljusticia climática a partir de la perspectiva de las defensoras del territorio y los derechos humanos.
Se seleccionarán a 12 periodistas para formar parte de un programa que incluye capacitación, acompañamiento editorial, financiamiento y publicación de artículos en medios de comunicación latinoamericanos.

América Latina es la región más mortífera para ser un defensor del medio ambiente, según el informe de Global Witness. Por su parte, las defensoras del medio ambiente enfrentan amenazas específicas, incluidas campañas centradas en su vida privada y violencia sexual. También son particularmente vulnerables a los efectos negativos del cambio climático, ya que esto acentúa la desigualdad de género y la discriminación.
El Acuerdo de Escazú, el primer tratado del mundo sobre protección de los derechos humanos de los defensores del medio ambiente, entrará en vigencia el 22 de abril de 2021, luego de obtener el mínimo necesario de 11 firmas. Los tres pilares que aborda el Acuerdo (Acceso a la Información, Participación Pública y Acceso a la Justicia en Materia Ambiental en América Latina y el Caribe) tienen múltiples dimensiones en cada país. Y su visibilidad desde el ejercicio periodístico puede ayudar a generar impulso para la implementación del acuerdo e impulsar a otros países clave de la región.
Como un aspecto clave rumbo a la acción climática de América Latina, se busca reunir 12 perfiles de mujeres defensoras ambientales y sus comunidades a partir de la mirada de periodistas de Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panamá, México, República Dominicana, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Venezuela, Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Paraguay y Uruguay.
Este programa también incluye una serie de sesiones de formación en aspectos claves del periodismo, junto a un acompañamiento editorial durante 4 meses que brindará herramientas requeridas para desarrollar un trabajo de calidad, que ayude a visibilizar la situación de las defensoras ambientales. El proceso se extenderá entre abril y septiembre de 2021 y no requiere de dedicación exclusiva. Las y los seleccionadas/os recibirán un pago de 350 euros por la realización del artículo.
