La conferencia tuvo como finalidad reflexionar sobre la relación entre las políticas industriales y económicas del modelo de desarrollo actual y las alternativas al desarrollo desde una mirada de sustentabilidad y justicia social a fin de contrarrestar los impactos del cambio climático.
Durante tres días, expertos de todo el mundo plantearon los pros y contras de implementar reformas estructurales profundas en sectores claves como los productivos: industrias extractivas, energéticas y agrícolas, así como en los económicos: regulación de los sistemas financieros para inversiones productivas y esquemas justos de distribución de los costos ambientales, principalmente en el contexto de América Latina, donde los sectores extractivistas mantienen una gran relevancia económica y son uno de los pilares en las estrategias de desarrollo social actual.
Por otra parte, el papel de la sociedad y su conjunto de expresiones son parte fundamental en cualquier proceso de transformación global, por ello también se debatió la importancia de modificar los patrones de consumo actuales que generan un elevado consumo energético y de implementar políticas públicas que busquen reducir las brechas de desigualdad existentes. En este sentido, dos de los temas destacados fueron los debates existentes sobre la justicia intergeneracional, que apuntan hacia una moderación y responsabilidad por parte de la generación actual en materia de consumo de recursos y el concepto de la Buena Sociedad, el cual pone en tela de juicio el término bienestar frente al buenvivir, que consiste en satisfacer las necesidades sin alterar el equilibrio de la naturaleza (“tomar sólo lo necesario”).
Otros temas de reflexión giraron en torno a la transferencia tecnológica y el Principio de Responsabilidades Comunes pero Diferenciadas y sus respectivas capacidades (RCPD-CR). A nivel mundial existe el consenso de facilitar ésta transferencia pero no se ha profundizado sobre qué, cómo y en qué medida debería darse, tampoco si se debería privilegiar la transferencia de conocimientos tecnológicos por sobre la tecnología en sí.
